More than one million restaurants and foodservice outlets in the US need supplies every day. These businesses rely on the timely delivery of hundreds of thousands of products to keep kitchens cooking, making the role of supply chain drivers in the foodservice distribution industry more important than ever. As the need for freight transportation grows, estimates show trucking companies will need to hire an additional 890,000 drivers over the next decade. According to an industry analysis by DAT Solutions, just one truck was available for every 12 loads needing to be shipped at the start of 2018, which is the lowest ratio since 2005. This growing shortage of drivers is pushing some retailers to delay nonessential shipments or pay high prices to get their goods delivered on time.

Representatives Duncan Hunter (CA-50) and Trey Hollingsworth (IN-9), with support from IFDA and the American Trucking Associations (ATA), introduced the DRIVE-Safe Act in March 2018, critical legislation that addresses the massive driver shortage by promoting opportunity and enhanced safety training for emerging members of this growing workforce. The bill has since been introduced in the Senate by Senators Todd Young (R-IN), Jim Inhofe (R-OK) and Jerry Moran (R-KS).
