We have 100 of the top drivers in the food industry competing, and some 300 supporters attending to cheer drivers on in this three part competition that tests a driver's skill and knowledge. But they also are one of the most valued and skilled members of your workforce. Every day they share the road with the public, navigating product safely to customer operations. This championship is a great opportunity to recognize your best drivers, and to celebrate and highlight safe driving skills. This competition includes three elements: a written exam, pre-trip inspection, and field course challenge. The weekend is capped off by a gala awards dinner where individual achievements of drivers are recognized. All of these elements are exciting for the drivers, their spouses, and for company management attending. This is also a “kid friendly” event and children of all ages are welcome to attend the competition, as well as the gala awards dinner. Driving Course Challenges Written Examination Participating in a Truck Driving Championship helps reduce losses, improve morale, and shows your insurance carrier that you “walk the talk” when it comes to safety. For drivers to compete in this national competition, they must have competed in a company or local/regional competition. Promote Safety & Reward Your Best Drivers!
If your company celebrates a strong safety culture, the IFDA Food Industry Truck Driving Championship can support your efforts. This annual competition — now in its 24th year — is a first-class safety event that tests the skills and knowledge of food industry drivers from across North America. Companies participating in the competition include foodservice distributors, foodservice manufacturers with private fleets, retail/wholesale distributors, and self-distributing retail supermarket companies.
A series of six driving course challenges—simulating everyday operating conditions—test the skills of the driver in handling individual problems and in evaluating the overall driving situation when moving from one problem to another.
The written exam consists of questions that measure a driver’s knowledge of safety and operating procedures. Awareness of highway safety rules and regulations, as well as first aid and fire-fighting procedures are important for successful completion of the examination. All questions that appear on the exam are screened to ensure fairness for all drivers. Two sources will be used for the 2010 written examination. These include the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations Handbook available through J.J. Keller & Associates or by calling (800) 327-6868, and the 2010 Facts for Drivers available through the ATA.
Vehicle Inspection
Each driver conducts a vehicle inspection to uncover five “planted” equipment defects and safety hazards and to determine the readiness of the vehicle for operation. Drivers are scored based on the number of defects they identify.

Driver Qualification
For the 2010 Championship: If the qualifying truck driving competition occurred within 12 months of the Food Industry Truck Driving Championship, the driver must have a “CLEAN” driving record for one year prior to September 10, 2010. A “CLEAN” driving record means no chargeable accidents, and no alcohol or drug related charges.
