07/08/2013

Three broadline foodservice distributors joined IFDA in June 2013 and we wish to welcome them into the IFDA community.

IFDA is pleased to announce that Thurston Foods, Inc., a family-owned broadline distributor, has rejoined IFDA.
Bill, Doug, and Jack Thurston founded Thurston Foods in 1947 after they returned from World War II. Since then, the company has grown into a full line, full service distributor and bakery supplier. Their product lines range from fresh meats, fresh produce, frozen, and grocery to paper, disposables, cleaning supplies, equipment, and small wares. The company is located in Wallingford, CT,  carries more than 15,000 SKUs, and has nearly 200 employees, Thurston Foods’ distribution area includes all of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island as well as parts of New York, New Jersey, Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. The company services accounts in all segments of the foodservice industry, including independent and multi-unit restaurants, health care, schools, day care, military and other mass-feeding operations. Key Thurston Foods contacts to IFDA include Peter Malone, chief executive officer, and Martin L. Thurston, vice president of sales. The company is a member of the UniPro Foodservice. IFDA is also pleased to announce that Vitco Distributors, Inc. — an independent distributor with a strong ethnic niche — has joined the association. The company was founded in 2001 by Kostas Vitakis, who as a young and progressive entrepreneur has provided the vision for the company based on his strong roots in the Greek community. Located in Fontana, CA, the company has grown into a broadline distributor with a 50,000 square foot facility, is making ongoing investments in new technology, and services independent operators from Fresno to the Mexican border. Key Vitco contacts to IFDA are Al Barilla, chief operating officer, and Kostas Vitakis, president. The company is a member of F.A.B, Inc. And finally, IFDA is very pleased to announce that Favorite Foods, Inc., a family-owned broadline distributor, has re-joined the association. Brothers Jeff and Chris Barstow started the company in 1987 with just a van and a plan to distribute dry goods to area restaurants. They had no direct distribution experience, but they were confident they could service the restaurants of the New Hampshire and Maine seacoast.  Since then, the company has expanded several times and now owns a 50,000 square foot facility with additional acreage available at the location for future expansion. Today, they are New Hampshire's only locally owned and operated broadline foodservice distributor. With 50 employees running 12 trucks from their headquarters in Somersworth, NH, their geographic coverage includes the NH and ME Seacoast; Concord, Nashua, and Manchester; and the NH Lakes Region. In 2002, Favorite Foods founded FIRA, the Favorite Independent Restaurant Association, a non-profit entity dedicated to helping local independent restaurants compete in a market dominated by national chain restaurants. Key Favorite Foods contacts to IFDA are Chris Barstow, president and CEO, and David Myers, chief operating officer. The company is a member of the UniPro Foodservice.
