GS1 News: Dick Tracy of Dot Foods Discusses Standards Role in Driving Innovation

Welcome New Members

GS1 US recently welcomed Chick-fil-A, Inc. to the initiative. The company joined the initiative in March, bringing the total membership to 136 organizations. Chick-fil-A, Inc. is a family owned and privately held restaurant company founded in 1967 by S. Truett Cathy. Devoted to serving the local communities in which its franchised restaurants operate, and known for its original chicken sandwich, Chick-fil-A serves freshly prepared food in more than 2,100 restaurants in 46 states and Washington, D.C.
 
Workgroup Updates
The Traceability Workgroup has started to work on product category specific roadmaps to increase adoption of GS1-128 barcodes in the industry. The group is also working on enhancing the GDSN Implementation Checklists to include steps from our recently published Foodservice Implementation Guideline for Case-Level Traceability Using GS1 Standards. These checklists will be part of our “Traceability Toolkit” designed to assist organizations in their traceability implementations and programs.
 
The GDSN Implementation Workgroup is reviewing the attribute changes for the November 2017 GDSN release. A subgroup did an assessment of the revised Child Nutrition updates for GDSN, as well as the attribute additions and changes. The recommendations from the sub-group were brought back to the workgroup and there are a few attributes that need further clarification. The workgroup also agreed to create a document with the changes that will be shared on the gs1us.org website.
 
The Operational Efficiencies Workgroup has started to work on an EDI process map. This will detail the EDI steps specific to foodservice and the ways GS1 Standards can be leveraged at each point. The EDI process map will lay the groundwork for the group’s discussion on areas for process improvement and further operational efficiencies.
 
The Marketing Workgroup continues to execute the 2017 marketing plan in support of driving awareness and education around traceability, data completeness and accuracy. Recent activities include the promotion of the new foodservice traceability guideline via association partner communications and press outreach, as well as the completion of the first Executive Q&A interview with Dick Tracy of Dot Foods.
 
The Joint Foodservice and Retail Grocery Data Quality Workgroup recently confirmed and welcomed three co-chairs:
  • Recipient/Retailer role - Jeffrey Cree from Ahold/Delhaize
  • Operator/Distributor role - Brad Best from Performance Food Group (PFG)
  • Manufacturer role - Regan VanTassel from ECOLAB
The group continues to review consumer-facing attributes to be included/excluded in the GS1 US National Data Quality Program, how to audit those attributes, and establish definitions of accurate vs. inaccurate data. The group is also discussing industry provided examples highlighting the use of Global Product Classification (GPC) codes on products and the possibility of including them within an attribute audit, as well as several examples emphasizing pack quantities related to complex trade item hierarchies.
